Maiden Voyage

We left San Fernanado, Buenos Aires, Argentina on May 15 and arrived at MacMahan Island, Georgetown, Maine,  USA on July 21. We hadn’t expected our maiden voyage on Sorella to be 7300 nautical miles! That’s over 8400 land miles, like driving from Maine to Florida, to California to Washington and back to Maine–at 7 miles per hour. We hope that will be our longest passage—been there and all that.

We made it to MacMahan Island in Maine, our destination goal. This is where Stephen grew up sailing every summer of his life, where I have been coming for vacation every summer since 1994. This is a magical place, with magical people, a number of whom came out in their boats in the Sheepscot River to greet us, cheer us on and usher us in to the island. It was very emotional for us, and it was a glorious site. We arrived and grabbed a mooring and invited everyone aboard for an impromptu noon cocktail party and show and tell.

Sorella got a brand new mooring built just for her in the MacMahan Island harbor and is getting her first alone time in a long time. We look forward to returning and getting our own alone time on the boat, so we can take the opportunity to organize and nest. When we moved aboard back in April, there was so much work still being done, we could only stash everything before taking off. Passage is not the time to organize, so it all feels a bit like we’re visitors. Soon, we will settle in and make it our home, finally.

And yet, already we have begun planning for our departure and travels in September, when we head south so that Sorella can be the belle of the ball at the Annapolis Sailboat Show in October. She’ll be the first hybrid electric catamaran featured at the show, and we are sort of thankful to be flying back to New Hampshire for niece Sarah’s wedding that weekend, rather than uncomfortably watching as so many strangers violate our home… 🤣

Rather than make a straight-shot passage to Maryland, we will take our time, hoping to visit friends and places along the way, and live the life we imagined when this crazy idea surfaced three years ago.

There are so many stories, videos and photos from the voyage yet to share, but we are giving ourselves a minute to recover, to grieve the loss of our sweet Tito, to remember Henny and be with family in New Hampshire.

Thanks everyone, for following our journey and cheering us on. Your support has been felt very deeply, and we hope you’ll stay with us!

Sorelle Holly and Becky were the first aboard and came bearing bubbly for a toast. Nephew Alden heralded our arrival with blasts from the sunset cannon!
These good friends passed a bottle of Prosecco onto the boat!
Flying the MacMahan burgee!
The cousins came out to greet us on Full House.
One of the boats in the flotilla was a Tartan 34 flying full regalia.
